Edward VI’s Homemade Blackberry Pie Recipe

“When you were dying, Edward quickly discovered, people would let you do pretty much whatever you wanted. So he made some new unofficial decrees:

  1. The king was allowed to sleep in as long as he wished.
  2. The king no longer had to wear seven layers of elaborate, jewel-encrusted clothing. Or silly hats with feathers. Or pants that resembled pumpkins. Or tights. From now on, unless it was a special occasion, he was fine in just a simple shirt and trousers.
  3. Dessert was to be served first. Blackberry pie, preferably. With whipped cream.”
My Lady Jane by Brodi Ashton, Cynthia Hand, and Jodi Meadows

Edward’s passion for all things blackberry is no secret; from his morning pie indulgence to his overall obsession with these delightful berries. As for me, I am in love with pie, particularly when it comes to the fruity varieties. I grew up on my grandmother’s delicious homemade blackberry pie.

Seeing as the My Lady Jane television series has been filmed and will soon be released, I thought it would be fun to share my grandmother’s recipe with you all, so we can enjoy Edward’s favorite breakfast meal together. I hope you enjoy this delicious pie – I know I do! Who knows, maybe it will bring a hungry kestrel to your kitchen window.

Ingredients

Dough

– 4 cups all-purpose flour

– 1 teaspoon salt

– 2 cups Crisco shortening

– 1 cup ice-cold water

Filling

– 4 cups blackberries or a combination of berry varieties

– 3/4 to 1 cup sugar (adjust based on the sweetness of the berries)

– 1/4 cup all-purpose flour

– 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon

Instructions

For the Dough

1. In a medium bowl, combine 4 cups of all-purpose flour and 1 teaspoon of salt.

2. Using a pastry cutter or fork, cut in the Crisco shortening until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.

3. Add ice-cold water to the flour mixture. Gently stir with a fork until the mixture is moistened and starts to cling together.

4. Gently form the dough into a ball. Divide it in half, using one portion for the bottom crust and the other for the top crust.

5. Roll out each portion on a lightly floured counter or between sheets of waxed paper to fit a 9-inch pie crust.

For the Filling

1. Preheat your oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit.

2. In a large bowl, combine 4 cups of blackberries or a mix of berry varieties.

3. Add 3/4 to 1 cup of sugar to the berries, depending on the sweetness of the berries.

4. Sprinkle 1/4 cup of all-purpose flour over the berries.

5. Add 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon to the berry mixture.

6. Gently toss the berries until they are coated evenly with the sugar, flour, and cinnamon.

Assembling the Pie

1. Place the rolled-out bottom crust in a 9-inch pie dish.

2. Pour the berry mixture onto the bottom crust.

3. Roll out the top crust and place it over the berries.

4. Trim and crimp the edges of the crust. Optionally, you can cover the edges with foil to prevent burning.

Baking the Pie

1. Bake the blackberry pie in the preheated oven at 400 degrees Fahrenheit until the filling is bubbling, and the crust is lightly browned.

2. This typically takes about 45 minutes. Keep an eye on the pie, and you may need to use foil around the edges if they start to brown too quickly.

3. Once done, allow the pie to cool before serving.
